The last outing for Bill Mason's Canoe

In 1999, we did a presentation about canoeing with children at the Heritage Canoe Festival in Peterborough, Ontario. While we were there, Becky Mason made a formal presentation of her dad's favourite canoe to the Canadian Canoe Museum. The process of making films for all those years meant that there were many "stunt doubles" and Bill didn't have just one red canoe, but Becky told the crowd that the one presented to the museum was the most representative of her dad's favourites.

Before turning over the most famous red Chestnut Prospector canoe ever made to the museum, Bill's daughter Becky slid the venerable craft into the water one last time. For an appreciate crowd that lined the banks, Becky graciously demonstrated some of the style paddling so often depcited in the Path of the Paddle films.

Parting shots

Rain danced on the water under a grey velvet sky as Becky Mason and her husband Reid McLachlan danced the battered old Chestnut through the intricate steps of one last canoe ballet at the lift locks in Peterborough.

Becky (at right) provided useful tips on technique with clear explanations for the crowd.

Reid (in stern seat below) had a little fun at Becky's expense when they demostrated some white water paddling skills.
