Gone fishin' I spent several hours at this location. It began in the early morning when I came upon a cow and calf moose feeding quietly in this small bay at the edge of Tom Thompson Lake in Algonquin Park. While I was photographing the moose, a Great Blue Heron landed nearby. Eventually, the bird grew accustomed to my presence and wound up doing some fishing quite close to my canoe. To get this type of shot, I often use my canoe as a floating camera platform. I'm either wading outside the canoe in shallow water, or lying down inside it in deeper water. For this shot, I was lying down with the canoe tipped over far enough that the camera was mere inches from the top of the water. This photo is one of five of mine that appeared in one of the recent books by noted Canadian photographer Freeman Paterson. Thousands of images submitted by hundreds of photographers were culled until a strong showing of images from coast to coast was represented in the book. Titled "The Last Wilderness", it was aimed at making a case towards preserving the remaining unique wilderness areas of Canada. Noted environmentalist David Suzuki provide the preface for the book. Leica R4 and 560mm telyt lens on Kodachrome film. |
