Lake Athabasca

Kyle and Brendan take advantage of calm conditions to paddle Lake Athabasca with a beautiful sunset as a backdrop

The wind and waves of Lake Athabasca constantly sculpt the shoreline into endless abstract patterns.

The sun setting over Lake Athabasca bathes an exposed forest in the warm, dappled glow of a protracted northern dusk.

Kyle tucks away our canoeing gear as a summer storm marches across the lake. This storm passed us by completely.

Within an hour, the calm waters we began in have been replaced by large rolling waves that obscure the canoes from each other. We ended this day around a distant point. Landing the canoes gave us some heart stopping excitement as the canoes were lifted and we surfed to shore on wild, express train waves.

To avoid being windbound, we often had to paddle early morning or late evening. It only took about an hours worth of wind to make passage unsafe for open canoes.

Both the boys enjoyed endless hours, cavorting in the sand. Brendan parked the bulk of his body in a deep hole he'd dug in the sand.
