Hiking to the Dunes

McFarlane River Base Camp

last supper

Our "last supper" of the canoe trip. We always like to save an appetizing meal for this occasion.

sandbar campsite

Our first impression of the small lake on the McFarlane were quite dismal. We found a great location on a small sandbar that gave us a broad view of the lake and made it easy to watch the wildlife. We'd see wolves along the shore often and eagles were performing aerial stunts in the sky above.

Spear point

We didn't expect to find any evidence of aboriginal inhabitation in this area. The places we traveled were often scoured by shifting sand and didn't offer much shelter to encourage nomadic hunters to linger.

This flint projectile point was found several kilometers back in the dunes. It was probably imbedded in an animal that escaped the hunters and perished far away from the hunt. Finding the artifact was less likely than finding a needle in a haystack.
