Barrier to the west

Like the early explorers who were headed west, we found the badlands to be an awe inspiring landscape that is daunting. They found the Badlands to be an obstacle on their way to the promised land.

For the entire month of July, my wife and I, plus our two young sons travelled from the southern reaches of the Badlands in Nebraska to the northern limits in Alberta. Our faithful VW camper van was burdened with mountain bikes to give us access into some of the more remote regions.

During this time, record breaking rainfall created havoc for the farmers and residents along the watershed drained by the creeks and rivers that flow through the region, but the abundance of water produced a lush bounty for the wildlife that normally lives in the harsh, dry region.
