Profiles of Nature episode, The Rise and Fall of the Minesing Swamp

Near the banks of the Nottawasaga River, the yearly flood changes the patterns of life. The cycle of depositing of silt and errosion of flood is constantly changing the landscape - ocassionaly nurturing new forests, occasionaly drowning old forests.

In order to get close enough to the heron rookeries for early morning photography, it meant inventing a unique method for pitching a tent. The yearly flood means there is no dry land within two kilometres of where we camped. A platform suspended between two canoes gave us enough room to pitch the tent.
