Horton River, North West Territories
Satellite Phone Communication

Brendan Kraiker phones his Grandma to let her know he's okay and that we made it to the end of the river.
Mouth of the Horton River on the shores of the Arctic Ocean

On previous trips we've made to the arctic with our kids, one of the hardest things we had to do was trying to convince grandma that the kids would be okay. On this trip, we took along a satellite phone and called home every Sunday for the five weeks were gone. The quality of the reception was fantastic and it certainly reassured grandma while we were gone. It was reasuring to be able to phone the float plane base the day before our pickup to confirm that a plane was coming for us.

The Satellite phone was much more reliable than any other communication device we'd tried before. Since this trip, we've used sat phones on two other occassions. We used a unit similar to the one in the photo to do a live "web cast" of our trip to the Athabasca Sand Dunes and we used one of the smaller Globalstar units on the 2001 Thelon Trip. Both worked exceptionally well.

The Horton River trip was a great adventure. I do plan to post some photos and descriptions here in the future, but I'm happy to answer any email questions about the river ([email protected])
